Robert (Bob) Martin was born in Shepparton, Victoria Australia. Educated in a small rural school, Melbourne University and beyond. He started his working life as a commercial chick sexer and moved on to become a teacher for over two decades.

For fifteen years he owned and managed a 25 thousand bird poultry breeding farm and hatchery at Tyabb, Victoria, a farming community on Mornington Peninsula, 35 miles south of Melbourne. Throughout his extensive experiences with poultry, Bob has sexed over 15 million chickens.
